Dream fans....WE ARE BACK!

We're reimagining The Dream as a weekly interview podcast with guests and segments about, I don't know.... whatever we want? Don't worry! We'll still be focused on the "American Dream" and all the assholes that make it infinitely harder to achieve. We'll just have a bit more freedom in how we present it.

    Update
I am so, so confused by this season. After the life coach season, I was pretty unsure about where the pod was going. This current season? Look, I like the idea of covering different topics, but some of these interviews are just not hitting the mark. Some of them feel more like rambling conversations rather than interviews. I had trouble even getting through and finishing it. Also, on the Dirty John episode, I found it odd that there was just an assumption the audience would know what this was about? I’m going to stick it out in hopes things turn around, but if you’re a new listener, just stick with season 1

The “always on” format doesn’t work.
This was such a great podcast. The previous seasons were the excellent journalist dives into problematic and predatory industries. I get that making those things is time consuming and expensive but the new seasons are just people complaining about how awful the world is now. Which it is! I agree! But if that kind of cultural criticism isn’t done well, it’s just tedious and depressing. Which is what this show is now.

Juicy, engaging, smart, fun, provocative, *highly* listenable
From the "Banned in the USA" episode: "by banning these words, you can effectively ban reality. You can pretend reality doesn't exist because there's no way to measure it." Woof. Concise and topical - we need to be saying these things and talking about them. I don't always see things the way the hosts do, but I love the room they make for disagreement and examining difference - I find that encouraging. We need that! I always jump on a new episode right away.

Words are powerful and have meaning. Unclear why you would present yout agenda as fact.

    I ❤️‍🔥 Jane Marie
She's just everything. Smart, funny, actually relatable, beautiful, and best of all, she tells such important stories! Also, I live hearing Jane Marie talk, laugh, and joke with her team while making the podcast. Please keep making this podcast!

All Gen X women need to listen to The Dream
Occasionally hilarious, Marie also has healthy outrage about the outrageous stuff. Real long form journalism. I love listening to everything she says.

    I’m sad
Loved this podcast the first couple seasons. Unfortunately, I am now done. Free Luigi? Shame on you Jane.

    Format change is great!
I’m loving this latest season and the weekly interview format change. I thoroughly enjoyed previous seasons as well but am loving the deep dive into specific topics related to the “American dream”.

    Lazy
I only stopped from giving 1 star because of the previous seasons that had structure. This current season is about nothing, which would be fine if at least the host showed some journalistic interest in each episode’s topic. Instead she’s just interviewing whoever and not really trying to reach anything in particular, resulting in conversations where the host jokes and fawns cloyingly for the guest’s approval. Her voice aside, this is really hard to get through

    Love but confused
Edited: I love your voice and your laugh, Jane Marie xx also #freeluigi 🩷 I love the dream. I’m a huge fan. I’ve listened to every season and have been here since day one. But what is going on during this current season? I can’t get a grasp for what they are doing during this season. The interviews are relatively interesting. But I don’t understand what they have to do with MLMs. I’m not suggesting that they only have to stick to the MLM topic. However, this season just seems to be all over the place. Maybe I am missing the point of this season? But missing the point or not, I’m confused. I do love to see how much they have grown over the years and how many people they are reaching. Love you Jane Marie x

    Wonderful
Thank you for the podcast. I enjoy its honesty. While I have enjoyed every episode the most current one really spoke to me. Thank you for the honest conversation about people who pretend to work hard for what they have when they have every advantage. Many other moments in the episode also resonated deeply. Also love Jane’s voice. I remember when a hostess on TAL or one of those shows was getting flack for vocal fry. Commentors need to get over themselves. Their comments about your voice does not make them special, intelligent or interesting. Keep up the good work.

    This Podcast is a Gem
Currently my favorite podcast. I look forward to every episode. The topics are relevant and important right now. Jane Marie is a great interviewer and wicked smart. She’s also a delight to listen to and I love how her personality comes through in each episode.

    Great podcast
I love this podcast. The host is smart and funny. She does a fantastic job of entertaining and educating. Ps-I love her voice (not that it matters).

    Review of Jane in particular
I thoroughly enjoy this show and look forward to every episode. But I particularly love Jane’s voice and find her laugh charming and comforting. Jane should be very pleased with herself for the quality job she and the entire little everywhere team does on The Dream.

    vax convo lacks nuance
Re. The RFK episode- the discussion about vaccines lacks nuance, especially the disparaging comment about nobody getting novacax— I know so many disabled & elderly people who have opted for it because they were actually harmed or at risk of harm from the MRNA covid vax. When you deride people who are skeptical of vaccines or have had negative experiences, it only pushes them into the clutches of RFK, MAHA, etc. and away from public health ethos. Naomi Klein’s Doppelgänger provides an important lesson on this.

    Love it
I’m really enjoying every interview this season. It’s become less focused, but the larger theme is related to previous seasons, more zoomed out. The cranks may find Jane’s voice “annoying” but I love it!

Really gross to condone cold blooded murder.

What is happening to this podcast?
This was a great podcast the first 2 seasons. I can’t even remember what season 3 was about so that isn’t saying much and I haven’t even made it through a full episode of season 4. What happened? I feel like Jane needs to leave politics out of her podcasts and stick with what works. Unfortunately, I’ll never know if she does since I am unsubscribing

    Used to be great!
The first couple of seasons were entertaining and made me think. But the latest season is terrible! One-sided stories and conspiracy theories. What happened?!!!

    Can’t support murder
I was all in and really enjoyed this podcast for a while but the most recent one about healthcare crossed a line for me I can’t go back from. Your guest made a comment about needing Luigi to kill more CEOs and I just lost my breath. I perhaps could have continued as you need guests from all across the spectrum but then Jane signed off with “Free Luigi.” Murdering heads of corporations because we don’t like our current multi payer health care system can’t ever be a consideration. That man had a wife. And children. And if that’s ok, where does it stop? Can right wing fanatics kill OB/Gyns for performing legal abortions too? I can’t believe you went there, Jane.

    Season 4 (SMH Yikes!!!)
Just listened to “Health vs Wealth”. It might be my last episode. Like many other reviews Season 1&2 were really excellent, Season 3 was bad but I listened to the full season anyway out of loyalty. Season 4 is nearly unlistenable. Jane is doing a terrible job interviewing guests. Sadly season 4 both the host and the guests are not to be taken seriously anymore. Health vs wealth may be my last episode. She brings on a guest whose credentials are impressive (when the guest herself lists them) that including former mayor candidate in LA. But after listening to half the interview I had to stop the episode and actually look up the guest. THIS PERSON got less than 4% of the vote for mayor of n that election. And then the guest and host ended the podcast with “free Luigi”!!!! A blow kiss to the guy that murdered Brian Thompson. I’m no fan health Insurance companies but that is offensive and tasteless. But sadly completely in line with all of season 4.

    Huh
I’m not sure what I am even listening to anymore. Week to week you have no idea what topic you’re going to get for the episode. Feels like a money grab unfortunately. Just had to throw something together to get that ad revenue smh Sad since the first 2 seasons were so good and the third has been nothing but a mess.

I know it’s hard switching from the usual format. I urge you to do your chill and take the time to listen to each episode. I’ve learned some useful things. XO

    “#freeluigi?? GROSS
March 20 episode ends with both guest and host parroting “hashtag free Luigi.” So gross to condone murder after an entire episode begging listeners to have mercy on “the unhoused.” I can’t even with this contradictory nonsense. This podcast has officially jumped the shark. Byeee… 👋🏻

    Conflicted
Loved the first, second and third season, and part of the 4th as well. It’s just getting a little confusing, especially the episode about the Dirty John (?). I’m not American, I have no clue what they were talking about for 99% of the time. I recommended this podcast to a friend and she loved it at first as I did, but like me is a little confused now. I’ll probably keep listening, i just hope this review comes out as constructive criticism.

    Babies not having babies
Sad story of a girl without intact family drifting from one extremist group to another ideological or abusive extremist group, on various ends of the political spectrum, seeking a sense of belonging. She can never walk completely away from any of them and has continued mutually abusive relationships with them. Warning: excessive expletives.
  • Misplaced Ads Ruin Everything
Listen to Seasons 1 and 2
Seasons 1 and 2 are fantastic—well researched and written, with a personal connection between the topic and host. Season 3, by contrast, feels too off the cuff for my tastes—there’s little to no structure for the interviews, some interviewees are well prepared but many are not, and there’s no strong throughline for the season other than being scammed or duped (which could potentially work if the episodes were a bit more substantive). The first two seasons prove this team can make a compelling and informative podcast—I’ll keep checking in with hopes they return to their roots.

    Dirty Dirty John
Very confusing. I’m not sure if it was the questions or that she was so inarticulate. Wish you could have got her focused.

    Might be too far gone
“One thing about me is I like to go to restaurants?” What am I listening to??? I’ve never been Jane Marie’s biggest fan but I’ve stuck with the show since the beginning because I felt like it was well-researched and told interesting stories. I’m sorry but this season is a mess. First of all, the snark is out of control, and the interviews just go on and on and on. Feels very unfocused. I keep listening because I hope they’ll get back to what was once an insightful show, but I’m not sure I’ll be subscribed much longer.
  • Kadence404
Had to amend my previous 5 star rating
Loved the first two seasons. They were excellent, well researched with a coherent narrative. That’s unfortunately no longer the case. Whatever this podcast is now, it’s not the least bit interesting. I’m annoyed I wasted my time listening to a whole boring interview before realizing there was no longer research for a larger story being told. If I wanted to listen to boring interviews on topics that have already been covered there are better interviewers out there than this host. Pass.

Perfect voice to listen to. Very knowledgeable about subjects & research is on point. Often shares personal experience which is very pertinent. I’m a fan

    Great content!! / so-so editing
I love this show and it’s so well researched and informative. I am so happy the latest season covers abortion — THANK YOU. Very needed always, especially in our current landscape. My only complaint is the editing. On a few episodes, the ads start mid-conversation. I was confused and kind of surprised, based on the podcast. A brief, “we’re going to take a quick break” before the ads would have made for an easier listen.

Just another snarky liberal. Gross. No thanks.

Jane Marie is a great interviewer
I’ve heard about this podcast for years but never listened, because, well, I already listen to enough podcasts. But I listened to the episode on Midtown AA, because I’m a sober person in DC and people are talking about it, and I was so impressed with Jane Marie’s smart and compassionate interviewing that I’ve now started getting into the back catalog. She’s very talented. Also, I don’t know who is editing, but they are doing a great job, too. Recommend.
  • RoseConnelly
I used to love this podcast
But I just can’t listen anymore. It’s like hearing an airhead talk to another airhead about something they don’t really care about but have an opinion on because they were told to feel a certain way. There’s no real curiosity about the subject matter, just judgment and comments like, “I guess, people think the mRNA vaccine could like, change their DNA, or something…? I don’t know. (Nasally laughter)” Ok? What do they actually think? Why do they think that? That would be more interesting to talk about. I can’t tell if the host is playing dumb or if she really doesn’t care to do any research. I mean it’s unlistenable, truly.

    One of my favorite podcast
I love this show so much. Jane is incredibly smart, compassionate, and thoughtful in exploring the issues related to what are essentially scams or cults.

I have not listened in awhile and recently came back. I am liking the new format. The episode on PE was intriguing and informative. Thanks for providing great content. I also love Jane’s voice (not in a creepy way :).

    I have to be honest
Seasons one and two are fantastic! I was incredibly excited to see The Dream return, but sadly, so far, it’s not what it was. Episode one of season three was promising, but episode two is horrible. Let me spare you from listening. The host plays 15 minutes of advertisements throughout the episode and then disingenuously blubbers about how she took COVID personally and can’t exercise for about 20 minutes. It could have been pared down to maybe two minutes at a maximum. Any seemingly useful data that would push the season’s story forward was presented as incoherent and thoughtless half jokes. It was like listening to an intoxicated person describe something they saw on the internet. I’m going to listen to the rest of season and hopefully I’ll be willing to edit this review. 10/25 what’s the point of this episode? Seems like historical filler. Is there a subreddit where we can just dump on this season? 2/27/25: Jane Marie has drove this podcast so far into the ground. Not only has she apparently stopped doing any amount of research, but she also seems to be re-traumatizing her guests and then offering what’s an essentially a very limp, “whoops.” I seriously wonder if she has some weird disease that’s eating away at her gray matter because she is so plainly brain dead. She tried saying states are going to prosecute abortion ex post facto, which is untrue and illegal. While I appreciate the take on these dangerous anti abortion groups, she’s doing everyone a disservice and cheapening her message by essentially fear mongering.

    A swing and a miss
I have listened and will likely continue BUT the host’s voice is very irritating and seems to be getting worse. Voice lessons can help, find a professional to help out. Also the ha-ha talkity talk is no bueno. Serious topics can have some comedy but not the easy breezy low level yuckity yucks.
  • MidwestMomInAZ
    More Op-Ed Than Journalism
This is a good podcast that flirts with the idea of investigative journalism but definitely is not that. It’s entertaining and the host is a decent storyteller but lacks the preparation and interview skills to give the listener additional insight. Midwest duck in an LA pond. Season 1 interview with the opposition was off the rails with the producer(?) screaming at the interviewee instead of letting him speak. Season 3 interview with Jessie Lee Ward was super cringe due to lack of prep. There were so many ways to take that interview that didn’t end with “I need a babysitter.” Sound mixing leaves a lot to be desired. There’s no reason for the dead air, jumps to ads mid sentence, and extreme volume fluctuations.
  • mustardandmaymay
Another show not about politics covering politics UGH
I was here for the MLM coverage but now it's just one-sided fascist talk about politics. As someone who is no party but draws pros and cons from both political sides I'm super disappointed. Enough of this blind and ignorant liberal hate speech that does nothing for the well-being of this country, it's SO hypocritical. Liberals are as evil as conservatives but perhaps more nowadays. At least I don't have to listen to her nasally voice.
  • CourtySpice
Love the show, S4 sound mixing needs work
Absolutely enjoyed all the previous seasons but cannot get over the poor sound mixing between the show portions and the ads. Love that you’re monetizing, get that paper! It’s just rough listening when I have to change my volume every few minutes. 💔
