Out Of Office: A Travel Podcast

242

Out of Office is a travel podcast hosted by us, Ryan Davis and Kiernan Schmitt. From early childhood, we were each infected with a serious case of wanderlust (among other things.) We define travel broadly, from local day trips to high-flyin’ overseas adventures. Every episode, we dig into one topic—ranging from the serious to the silly, the practical to the outlandish—and give advice on how to get out there and explore the world.

Great for both history and travel lovers!
I just found this podcast and I have been listening to it all week long. As a fellow traveler and history lover, I find their episodes entertaining and full of great suggestions. I live in Nashville and loved all the Tennessee episodes. I have traveled many places in the world that their episodes cover and I agree with many of the off-the-beaten path tips. I also like learning about some of the places I have been, especially in South America, and will use some of their suggestions in my travel planning. Looking forward to future episodes.

    Graveyard and Woman Pilot
What can I say. I love this podcast. After these last few weeks, I am particularly grateful for it. I have to say, listening to two friends as passionate about travel and nerdy museums as I am brings joy. We are going to need a lot more to get through these next four years. Anyways, as far as graveyards. We spent time in Edinburgh and northern Wales this past July. We had the chance to visit the Greyfriars Kirkyard. If you ever have a chance, it is sooo cool. So many stories there!! I also really enjoy led listening to Ryan’s interview with Stephanie Wallach. My husband is a dispatcher with an airline and my son is at OU studying aviation sciences and is a pilot. Loved hearing another person share her knowledge of the industry. Also, very appreciative of her and the women pioneers in the industry. BTW Ryan, sent you a restaurant recommendation for Valparaiso. I am sure you will visit. We only had time for a day trip. Wish I could have spent a night or two. Can’t wait to see pics! Jen Pennoyer

Great show! Tips on solo travel?
Love the pod; earnest, open-minded, fun, and funny! I’m pretty sure the theme music lowers my blood pressure. I enjoy solo travel (male, mid-30s) and would love an episode or more on your experiences traveling solo. Most of your advice would already apply, but it would be great to hear some specific tips for going it alone in an unfamiliar place! Lodging, exploring, dining alone without feeling awkward, etc. Keep up the great work, guys!

It could be so much better!
Great topics and talented hosts. But… had it been less chit-chat and cutesy, and more content focused, it would have been a much better show for the listener who really wants to research places to go. (As it is, the show doesn’t really start for the first 20 minutes or so, and even then is mixed with unrelated chatter once it gets into it.) Bummer.

    Where will politics take you?
I’m a newer listener, I love travel. I started listening because I was hopeful you would share fun travel ideas and adventures, and you did. Where should I go next? What are your ideas? I have a 45 minute drive to work, so your show length was great!! The more I listened, the more politics came up. Oh no, they are taking a wonderful idea and turning it off. I was so bummed. Travel is one area we can all happily meet together, discuss, plan and be excited about. And now, you’ve ruined it - why oh why do you have to talk politics? Whatever side you are on, and honestly I don’t care, you have turned off 50% of your listeners. I don’t understand, why? I remember the great days when it was a personal thing who you were voting for, do what is right for you, but no need to share, especially on a travel show. So, with that, I wish you farewell. Safe travels ahead, and hopefully focus on your mission - travel.

    Great travel podcast!
I love listening to Out of Office: A Travel Podcast. Kiernan and Ryan are excellent, informative hosts with great senses of humor. I’m eagerly planning some time in New England next summer and hope there is another installment on Boston coming soon. I’m definitely going to read the Secret Boston book. I’m also eagerly awaiting the Christmas episode, especially so I can hear about this year’s gift exchange.

Out Of Office is my go-to travel podcast. I love the broad range of topics they cover, from hidden gems to well-known destinations. The hosts' quick wit and humor keep things light, while their personal experiences and historical insights give each episode a unique depth. Whether you're planning a trip or just love learning about new places, this podcast delivers. Highly recommend!

    Great Travel Podcast!
Love this podcast! Kiernan and Ryan have great travel recommendations and make it fun to hear about new places. I am excited for the Secret Boston book as we have a trip planned there next month and hearing Kiernan talk about some of the things to see on the podcast will have us doing some searching for these! I also enjoy they do a variety of large and smaller cities. The last stop is always exciting to hear! Thanks for sharing your love of wanderlust and travel!

    Oh baby!
My second favorite travel podcast after Rick Steves! ;) Great balance of fun rapport with interesting and helpful info on all sorts of cool spots. Love learning more about locations to add to my to-visit list, specifically national parks and South America.

    A wonderful travel podcast!
One of my favorite podcasts. It is both funny and informative at the same time. Ryan and Kiernan have excellent chemistry together, always helping to inspire the spirit of wanderlust, even (and especially) during the workday week! Looking forward to getting my hands on a copy of, Kiernan Schmitt’s new guidebook “Secret Boston: An Unusual Guide”, for the definitive and essential guide to Boston. I suspect this, soon to be hailed as a “literary masterpiece” and will be THE essential guide to Boston. Ryan’s not too bad either. Keep up the great work!

    Not a Brutal Review
I hate banter on all podcasts except this one. I’ve been meaning to leave a review but they once again mentioned ol’ Cornhusker today and I was cracking up, so I had to pop in here real quick. Found these guys about a year back and I’ve been keeping up with new releases but also catching up here and there. This is a great travel listen with lots of varied content and their conversations are always enjoyable to follow with witty interjections that keep me chuckling.

    Wow, what a podcast
I just spent the last three months listening to all 181 episodes and I have to say this is one of the best travel podcast I’ve come across. The both of you really are engaging, personable, and pretty knowledgeable when it comes to the topics at hand. Kiernan, your interview with Rick Steves is the one I remember well (I’m honestly not a fan, but I listen to the whole 35 minute interview) and because of you, I am now in national Park enthusiast. Ryan, I absolutely love your travels in South America. I feel it’s a continent that isn’t really looked at when people consider going on a nice vacation. I would love to recommend Brazil for your next big trip down there. it is my understanding that they no longer require visas from American tourist and it is my opinion a lot of the more inland cities have a lot of European charm.

    Great conversation and meaningful tips
I recently discovered this podcast and have listened to a number of episodes. I enjoy the banter between Ryan and Kiernan. I have an upcoming trip to Boston and Portland in the next couple of weeks and am looking forward to checking out the places they recommended. In your recent episode you were looking for trip recommendations. I recommend you visit Minneapolis and St Paul. Ryan would love the parks, lots of cool history and some amazing places to get a cocktail.

I may be conservative, you may be Romney libs, but I love your show. We need more episodes!!!

    Mammoth Cave Review
Our family visited Mammoth Cave as well this week and concur wholeheartedly with your review of the visit!! We stayed at the campground in the national park and would recommend that as well. Also, we drove over to Nolin lake to escape the heat one afternoon at the little beach/state park there.

    Does Ryan like Kiernan?
Love the show! Requests for the future: - (if you’ve been) travel destinations outside of the americas. - Best of episodes (best art cities, best college towns for a weekend trip, etc.) - Discussion of considerations for women travelers. On to Morocco episode I was so surprised sexism and street harassment never came up - I’ve never been catcalled or touched by strangers more and men straight up would not listen to the women in our group. It was a wild culture shock! Obviously you’re two men but would be interesting to hear about. Thanks for a great pod!

    Favorite podcast!
Love this podcast! The witty banter and extensive episodes on Latin America and national parks makes it unique. I’ll be studying abroad in Madrid in the fall and have been listening to the city guides and travel tips episodes to help prepare. I’m curious, did either of you study abroad in college or have recs for must see places in Spain or Europe (it’ll be my first time in Europe)? Thanks, excited to keep listening!

Good fix for some serious wanderlust
Ryan and Kiernan’s OOO Podcast is a perfect fix for my always dreaming of travel brain! I enjoy the structure of the podcast (banter, substance, extras) and the humor woven throughout (1/3 witty, 1/3 silly and 1/3 awkward). The analogies of “prepare for take off” and “the last stop” keep to the theme of the podcast and, when it’s time, I find myself reciting it along with them! Thank you for adding so many places to my travel bucket list and continuing to educate us on the places and cultures of the world!

I love these guys. It’s a little bit of a nerdy show, but with enough irreverent humor to give them an edge. It’s the best travel podcast.

Very fun travel podcast with good info and down to earth laid back hosts. I enjoy the interviews with folks like the NYT person or Rick Steves. Also the (insert city) 101 is quite helpful.

    Love it!
I feel transported to a unique place with the funniest, cleverest tour guides when I listen to the informative, lively episodes. Based on one of the podcasts, when visiting Wilmington, NC, I saw a early 20th century mural in a downtown post office. Keep up the good work!

    Pack Your Bags, Buster Brown!
If you are looking to learn about new destinations and get great travel recommendations from a trustworthy and reliable source, then this podcast should be your first (and last) stop. The friendship between Kiernan and Ryan along with their funny stories, banter, and travel expertise drive each episode. At first, as a National Park enthusiast and Boston-area resident, I was focused on only particular episodes/topics. However, as I listened, I found myself considering visits to places I had never thought of before after hearing more about them from the co-hosts. There’s a balance of both domestic and international locations discussed and now I listen even if I don’t feel particularly drawn to the destination, so as not to miss out an update from a past episode or preview for something coming up. I honestly feel as though I’m a bystander to a conversation between friends giving travel tips while listening to OOO podcast. It’s worth a listen. You’ll be happy that you did!

    So much nonsense banter...
I have tried to get into this pod, again and again, I will download an episode but the 15 minutes of banter is too much... these guys are possibly the most boring men I have ever listened to.
  • nutellakell
    My favorite travel podcast!
You guys are awesome! Love all your location-based episodes especially. Also as a fellow Bostonian who lived in Bushwick for two years, I feel such a connection with you two. Thanks for all your hard work!

    Ryan rules
Finally a travel podcaster that does things I actually would want to do. Natty wine and gay bars? Yes please! It’s actually so impressive the traveling he does in latin america with maybe the worst spanish comprehension I have ever seen. It makes me think that if Ryan can do it, I can do it!

Was looking for London travel info and found the first timers to London episode and found it helpful. Then listened to Stowe 👍👍 really enjoyable.

I enjoy the banter between these two guys! They always make me laugh…or at least smile😉. I enjoy their individual perspectives on their travel topics, as well as any other topics that pop up on the show! Keep up the great work! Educational and fun!

Ryan is the best, Kieran is pretty good too!
Love this podcast, definitely worth a 5 star rating. Even if I'm not particularly interested in the location they are discussing, I still find the episode fun and interesting. It's fantastic that Ryan is doing all this traveling and reporting back. It's so funny that Kiernan, sitting at home all the time, thinks he's so much better than Ryan, I guess he's just jealous. Anyway, great podcast, looking forward to many more episodes!

    Ignorant
You lost me less than 2 minutes into the Medellin episode when stating “oh nothing drug regulated ha ha ” when discussing the attractions your guest would share about the city. Do better, this type of rhetoric is racist and unnecessary.

    Y’all never disappoint!
As a listener for several months, I always look forward to your next episode! I am especially enjoying listening to your Christmas special as wrap the last of my Christmas gifts to go under the tree! Being a life-long Catholic, I can relate to your conversations and appreciate the Catholic traditions you speak of. Also, I had no idea that Pope Frances has announced the Mysteries of Light! I’m apparently not keeping up! I’ve been retired about a year and your podcasts always teach me something new and continue to inspire me on my travel journey. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! Map please
Love the podcast, went to Norway and Colombia recently and really enjoyed the Colombian episodes, don’t know if there are Norway episodes. This inspired my thought. I think it would be super awesome if there could be an interactive map on your website where someone could click a country or region and it would list all of the episodes that talk about that country or region. I think it would be great for travel preparation and inspiration! Thanks.

    Fun and informative
I have been looking for a travel podcast that fills in the week between Rick Steves episodes for quite some time and never found one to be worthwhile — that is until I discovered OOO (ooh-OOH-ooh). They feature many interesting destinations (if you like Mexico City or Boston, are you in for a treat!), and their good natured banter is a load of fun. I sometimes laugh out load during my workout (which is when I listen), which gets me some looks! The only slightly disconcerting thing is that we embark on this journey each episode on a plane and then disembark, at The Last Stop, from a train 😜! Seriously, it is entertaining and informative — I love the show!

    Fun listen for travel lovers!
I stumbled upon this podcast and have really enjoyed it! There’s a ton of great recommendations, from what to do in Panama City to little gold nuggets like the Wikipedia list of post office murals (will be looking out for these!). Big fan of the destination episodes, so keep those coming :)

    Love this podcast!
I was looking for a new travel podcast and I’m so glad I found this one. The hosts are fun and engaging, and they cover a lot of different topics, not just guides to different places but also random travel things. Also it’s really inspired me to be more, if not tourist than more adventurous in my own city (Washington DC). Keep up the fun show!!

    Entertaining and Fun
I love listening to these guys. They are funny and entertaining. They mess with each other and are good sports about it. I can listen to these guys talk about anything! I love travel podcasts, and it is such a bonus to have entertaining hosts to talk about my favorite topic! Thank you!!!!

    Rick Steves trippin
The podcast finishes with a segment titled “the last stop” where both hosts share a board adornment of anecdotes inspiring the spirit of wanderlust even during the workaday week. Undoubtedly, this podcast has become a permanent last stop in my life and daily listening . Ryan and Kiernan are both eloquent, educated, and evocative. Together they provide an entertaining and informative product bringing people closer to the world around them and the adventures we all seek. Thank you guys! Andres

    Good and funny travel podcast
Out of Office is a good and funny podcast which features unique perspectives about where to go and what to see. Ryan and Kieran don’t lose sight of the person doing the traveling. And I can say from personal experience that they read their emails!

You two are hilarious and crack me up often! I love the travel info as I am obsessed with travel. Went to Portugal last year, highly reccomend. Turkey this year and Peru in April 2024. I love the peru episodes, the how to's and the obsecure meseums are my favs! I have to add this part, I am a concervitive but stay away from American politics because people are obsessed. Guys we don’t wanna hear politics
These guys are pretty funny and have a good rundown on their topics. Negative is a lot of Progressive bias, but hey AOC is the future and we only have what 6 years left according to her. Vote Blue🤦‍♂️. East Coast and showing it, but I’m a life long San Diegan so Phoenix is East Coast to me. Guys put the blue down. I
