Mafia Tapes

339

Mafia Tapes dives into the legend of the notorious DeMeo Crew, and their once trusted associate Dominick Montiglio. The 8-part series tells the story of Dominick’s life, at the center of one of the most vicious mafia crews in history. With access to newly discovered audio tapes featuring Dominick, this isn’t your average mob tale. This is the real story of a man battling with the two sides of his nature: the hero and the villain; the truth teller and the con man; the lover and the fighter; the mortal and the immortal. Dominick Montiglio, in his own words, for the last time.

    Fantastic? No. Entertaining? Sure.
Amateur reporting, too much narration, inaccurate representation of facts and clear evidence of some really lazy research (not throughout, but definitely in some places— there are moments that she really goes the extra mile and others she just obviously didn’t take the time.) A story like this should have been done by someone a bit more advanced and with a bit more experience in my opinion. Great story though, worth a listen if you’re looking to kill time.

    Too much narration
Way too much Celia narration. I’m not interested in listening to her tell Dom’s story. I want to hear it from Dom himself. Comes across as an amateur production from a host that is not knowledgeable enough on the subject.

    Poignant, compelling, educational and accurate
Well crafted and deliberate storytelling mixed with journalism. Gripping stories, learned new information, a fresh perspective and look into this side of the mob. A great listen and would highly recommend.

    Factual content is INCOREECT
I must write this review because the talented woman that did this podcast with Dominick has real potential in journalism. BUT you can’t misrepresent facts when telling a factual non fiction story.Prime Example —-Roy Demeo did not kill the College salesman AFTER killing the Chris Rosenberg. WRONG . Roy killed College Salesman before killing Chris. Nino told Roy after killing the kid enough is enough get rid of Chris. 2-3 weeks LATER Chris Rosenberg was killed. It’s literally 20 second google search and you get these facts correct. It’s on Roy’s wiki page!!! There are other facts the reporter just misrepresents and gets wrong. I have to point this out because she’s very talented but she’s got a major hole in her game that needs to be fixed if she wants her career to blossom and not get derailed. STICK TO FACTS.

    Narrator, please talk much less!!
I’m just on the 1st episode, too much narrating! I couldn’t even listen to the full episode, skipping around to avoid the narration. Should be 90% less narration! Especially for a mob story, let’s hear more Brooklyn talking, it sets the vibe, Brooklyn needs to carry this narrative! Nothing personal host, but it’s way too much of you. Hoping episode 2 improves greatly, or unfortunately I’m not here for the remaining 6. I’m here after listening to the “Deep Cover” podcast with Joe Pistone. Which is fantastic, was like reading an amazing book, and not able to put it down. Update: Narrator absolutely ruins this story, couldn’t even get through episode 2. So disappointing!

    Top Journalism
This podcast beautifully weaves together the storyline and does a fantastic job of feeding the listener all sides of a very complicated web of stories into one.

    It could have been great!
This could have been a great podcast…but the film makers voice is not only annoying but she’s speaks way too much..

Very good story, but the narrator ruins it for me.
  • CC221234
I was into it through episode 2.
I was into it until the Narrator commented on his (Dominique’s) house. Just seemed rude and irrelevant to the story.

    Loved! Until Episode 6….
Well Montiglio’s daughter just seemed like a delight. Good god I feel so bad for every person that has to deal with her on a daily basis. I was super into the 1st half of this podcast season. The story telling was great and really sucked you in but then it’s like she ran out of ideas or direction for the show but has to do a set minimum of so many episodes so she just fills the rest with whatever she can ramble on about. So the fact that this was all put together and presented by a woman is can be overwhelming or annoying. It almost feels like the inside of a woman’s thoughts as she and dude own daughter just second guesses, accuses, blames and overly analyzes every action/ thought and reaction to said action and/ or thought of this man’s life, which comes to a peak on Episode 6 when dudes daughter comes barreling out of nowhere to reveal herself as what I can only describe as a colossal “Karen”, with all the self assured/ self righteous, better than thou, personal attack you’d expect. She still at this moment makes my skin crawl. You can tell she’s been waiting her entire life for this, her moment to just publicly shame and spit on her fathers name super aggressively. It’s an exhausting one direction daughter’s hate speech including disrespect, disappointment and resentment about her own father that most of us wouldn’t say in a private therapy session but she gladly tells the world as often as possible. Most reflect fondly and wouldn’t ill of the dead but her daughter is just making a day out of it isn’t she. Having said that I want to clarify I really did enjoy most the other episodes, and podcast as a whole especially the detailed story telling that gets the creation of imagination going. I just wanted to share a man’s insight that most are probably too polite to share

    Favorite Podcast!
Celia did an amazing job covering the stories and even getting a chance to sit down with Dominik was the icing on top. Getting a glimpse inside the Gambino Crime Family was absolutely amazing. I listened to this while I was at work and the way Celia and the rest of the team that worked on this podcast had been able to give it so much life I almost felt I was there in a sense. I hung on to every word and I appreciate this whole team that went into so much depth in the story. Thank you guy’s for covering a hard mafia life story but being so passionate about it. I look forward to more content. Peace!

    It was okay
Which it would have the real mafia people talk. Would have been more interesting

    Horrible Daughter
This podcast is amazing! I’ve always been so fascinated with the different mob stories! The one thing I will say is that the daughter is so unbearable she is so back and forth and just so critical of her father but she’s totally fine with the mob boss uncle, what a joke. Other then her I loved this podcast.

    Excellent
Celia does a tremendous job here. I’m pretty familiar and enthused with this storyline and have consumed tons of content around it yet I still learned plenty of new information and perspectives. Great wok and highly recommend.

Great job, I enjoyed this very much. You have told a very interesting story.

    the ending
this Ending did Dom Wrong and celia knows this deep inside. Not going was a choice he thought you to make? really? Even after expressing that your first thought was that you may have been partially responsible for his spiral? first 4 episodes were great. then, it became more so about Celia’s opinion of Dom than Doms story. this was a terrible telling of a tortured souls life. save your time

    Great show
So interesting to here these stories of Dominick’s unique life. I really enjoyed this podcast. Nice job by everyone. The writing and interview questions were great. The host did a good job.

    Wow
I liked the podcast, I had just one question. I thought richard kuklinski - aka - the iceman was part of the roy demeo crew but nothing was mentioned about him in this podcast.

    Outstanding
This was an absolutely well done and riveting podcast! I enjoyed this week to week like no other I’ve listened to in quite some time. Ms. Aniskovich you did a stellar job telling this story and setting the stage for me as a listener. Thank you! IG: ohara_shaun

    Decent story, absolutely terrible host
The story is quite interesting, and utilizes a ton of interesting footage from a mobster I didn’t know anything about. But oh my God the host is absolutely terrible… it is well edited and put together. But her lines are so dad and she is such an awkward voice actress. Put the worst part are the extremely basic repetitive questions about morality. Not to say that that couldn’t be interesting. But she’s literally saying things like “when he set off that car bomb and killed that innocent child that’s when I had a hard time sympathizing with him.” Haha what!? He spends multiple episodes going back-and-forth on whether his childhood was bad enough to justify his actions. Which could be interesting in theory. But these questions are like what a fifth grader would ask. The whole nature versus nurture thing is so boring. So given that the podcast obviously can’t tackle those issues, let’s just keep it interesting and talk about the mafia. When it does stick to the topic it is pretty good!

    Authentic
This podcast was terrific listening to all the stories by Dominic brought back many memories. I have an idea for a show focusing on Arthur Ave in the Bronx during the 1930’s to the 1970’s would tell a story of the mafia that has never been told

    Daughter is unbearable.
Everything about this podcast is excellent but the daughter makes this podcast brutal almost unbearable to continue to listen to.

    Well done!
    I don’t understand why I’m so sad.
  • here for the stories
    Keeps you wanting more
Really nicely done, Celia is a great story teller who seems to have done her homework and verified her information before telling the story. Every time I listen to this podcast I can’t wait for the next one. Definitely worth a listen.
  • Ajbuda
    Narrator is horrible
The holier than thou tone of the narrator is grating. Guess what, the rest of us aren’t mobsters and understand these things are wrong too. if you are going to call yourself a reporter, do that. We don’t need to hear you judging them every 10 minutes. Present the info, let us do the judging. I know podcasters give their opinions, but she does it to the point where it is horrible. Plus she makes assumptions to how people are thinking that just don’t make any logical sense, & I don’t believe that that was how the person was thinking at all.
  • Chavrifybjeanfh
    This is not your story!
The narrator is so self centered, that she makes this about herself than about the story. Lady, you might have written the story, but don’t put yourself in the middle of it as the main character. And stop asking these silly questions
  • Jersey Guy Jack
    Decent show
I spent weeks listening to Mafia hosted by Fleet Cooper and it seemed that every other commercial was on Mafia Tapes, so I gave it a try. Made it through 3.5 episodes and gave up. Hype from the commercials made me think it was better than it is. Celia does a good job. Overall, 3 stars at best.
  • B_More_Mel
    Skip It
"But the question is, could he have made another decision"? YES! He has his own agency, just like most other people on this earth. This podcast is literally stories from the mobster and the host asking "but did that have to be done" and "can I even believe what he's saying"? I truly, truly don't understand the goal of this podcast. Find another one.

    Mafia Tapes
I’ve never listened to anything like this before. It took me in with the first episode, and I really enjoyed keeping up! High energy and very entertaining. I’m so glad I had a chance to listen to Celia Aniskovich’s work. Great Job!

    Episode 4 ?
What happened? After the 1st episode I was hopeful that this project would unearth new info about the Gemini Crew so that the victims families might be able to move on but it has quickly turned into a carnival on a very serious case in the history of the Mafia. It’s quickly devolving into the not so coherent at times self pitying ramblings of a tortured soul in Montiglio. I’m a little shocked at how disingenuous exploiters like Ross Brodar and now added into the mix is some kid Josh who was allowed to commandeer this episode when he has zero insight into the case. He gives me not a shred of confidence to believe anything that comes out of his mouth. Where’s his court transcripts ? I hope the series gets back on track soon or it will have been a huge waste of money to even air it. The dollar signs obviously popped into Brodar’s head shortly after Dominic met him allegedly at an art show bc that cat didn’t even wait for the dirt on Dominic Montiglio’s grave to settle before he releases the shoddy Lynchpin of Bensonhurst mess. I sure hope at least Dom’s daughter gets something out of this if anyone does. I told the producer when we spoke that I suspected Montiglio was a bit more culpable in some of the murders than he let on but only he knows the truth b cause I don’t think Testa, Senter or Borelli who sure do know the truth will ever talk about it if and when they are ever released. Pete Lafroschia may know some more too but he’s already in the clutches of his own exploiter, another shill like Brodar out to make a buck off the misery of the victims families. One last rant : I still say both the NYPD and the FBI knew people were being killed in big numbers and knew who was doing it but continued to gather evidence to get the Bigger Fishes they hoped to catch in their nets. They coulda stopped the carnage years before, those surviving detectives and agents should be ashamed of themselves bc a lot of non OC people died along the way. They rationalize it by thinking who cares? Gangsters killing Gangsters clean our streets, let’s build a massive case against the hierarchy of one if not two big Cosa Nostra families in NYC (Gambino’s and Luchese) . They’re just as big of self promoters and ego maniacs as the crews they ever so slowly hunted down, total shame.

    If you know you won’t.
If you’ve read ‘Murder Machine’ or watched ‘The lynchpin of Bensonhurst’ there is no need to listen to this podcast as its just excerpts from the latter w/ commentary.

    Not Your Grandmother’s Mob Story
I was expecting the usual plot line here, but was super-surprised. This host is telling two stories: Dominick’s and ours. Stepping in to the “Big Fish” tales, Aniskovich is asking us to think about how we judge people, why we judge people, whether we are the ones telling “stories” when we judge people. There’s something here for everyone, car bombs and catharsis; violence and victimization. Some will hear only the surface story, others will appreciate the subtle takeaways of a sad and brutal life.

    Amazing podcast
This is an amazing podcast to listen to it keeps you on the edge of your seat.
  • carlgood1
    Genuinely poor and 100% derivative
This podcast is like watching Montiglio’s interview on YouTube with a clueless girlfriend who insists on interrupting as if she has any additional insight to offer. I stuck around thinking “this couldn’t possibly constitute a podcast - surely at some point the host has some *actual* insight. But the fact that it appears to not even dawn on her that the transfer of power Gambino had envisioned might be instead assumed by the heir apparent to literally everyone (Dellacroce) is stunningly naive. She just makes up an assumption in her head, that the Big Paul meeting was an empty formality and questions whether Montiglio was therefore making it up. That’s when I turned it off good LORD try a little harder. Love that she randomly cites fake unnamed sources in passing lol. Oh child.

This is a rip off of The Lynchpin of Bensonhurst. Regurgitating the same story and interviews. Watch the documentary or read Murder Machine. This girl has no idea what she is talking about.

    Less Sap
This is a unique take on the genre. Maybe it’s the subject, but cutting down on the sap would make it more palatable. Like especially don’t add saccharine music to something that is already a greasy cheese ball, or a cheesy grease ball- yeah that’s your subject.
