Battle Tactics For Your Sexist Workplace

374

If you've ever had a job, you know what we're talking about. Being talked over. Being passed over. Being told you're too intimidating or not authoritative enough. Racism and sexism at work might not look the way it did a generation ago, but it's still very real. Jeannie Yandel and Eula Scott Bynoe break down how sexism and racism shows up in the modern workplace. And with humor, smarts, and help from some badass experts, they bring you real tactics you can use to push back.

Good show, hosts need more support
When the show is “on,” so-to-speak, it’s fantastic. Insightful, informative, and the only show that really “goes there” with issues we are aware of, but don’t talk about. Guests are interesting, and the hosts are smart and well-informed. The hosts have had a lot of personal challenges… Issues with the podcast sponsor, deaths in the family, mental and physical health struggles, etc. There was a weird period where Eula was talking a lot about astrology during otherwise legit interviews; I imagine the personal struggles she was having led to this. It was… distracting.. The frequent “breaks” in episodes/seasons with no reliable restart date made it really hard to keep listening. They’re on another one right now.. I want this show to succeed. I think the hosts need more support to make it happen. Here for it!

    So necessary!
    I’ve learned so much!
  • BTSW Awesome
    I have learned so much!!
I love this podcast and I love the conversation and banter between Genie and Eula Scott but most importantly I love the real talk, data, stories from real people who are reassuring us - our workplaces are sexist (and more). Thank you so much!!

    This! All of this!
Wow, finally feel like I’m not just over here going crazy. This is really happening everywhere. Thanks!

    BTSW gone indie
I had not paid attention to the story of why BTSW went quiet in late 2019 (a lot of things were going on, right?) So glad this is back, is freed from the “corporate overlord” that was a local NPR affiliate. ;)

    The truth!
There are not enough good things to say about this show! First I was shocked when it came through KUOW, and sad you not surprised when it got fired from there. It is practical! Speaks truth to power and is a source of hope and real tactics I can use in all of my work settings. Thank you ladies for making this!!

    This is for us, guys
Listening to women and people of color is the only way for straight white guys like me to unlearn the toxic behaviors we learned as boys. Unlearn these things with Eula and Jeannie instead of unlearning them the hard way: on the job.

    I love this podcast!
Jeannie and Eula are phenomenal at pointing out the sexism in our workplaces, even when the sexism is internal. I’ve been a long-time listener and am SO glad they’re back. Some of the latest episodes directly relate to situations that I’m experiencing at my job right now and I’ve been able to reframe my thinking around these situations and use their tactics to my benefit. This podcast is funny, helpful, community-building and all about solidarity for ALL women. I devour every episode as soon as it comes out. :)

    Just another misandrist, feminazi podcast
You’ll never achieve peace while fueling your journey with hatred. This pod is simply an outlet for the hosts to bash men.

    So glad they’re back!
I’m a long time listener— we all need battle tactics for our sexist workplaces and BTSW!

    Incredibly Cathartic
I am so so grateful that BTSW has come back for a third season. I find that the conversations are on point and and resonate loudly with me. I remember finding out about the podcast early in season two, and I knew immediately that I had to go back and listen to all of the previous episodes. Thank you for creating this wonderful and incredibly cathartic podcast.

    Practical, insightful Feminism
I love this podcast, it’s a sanity saver for trying to survive the Patriarchy. And while I of course love the many moments of “OMG that has happened to ME!” validation, I also very much appreciate the inclusivity that Jeanie and Eula bring, checking themselves and us listeners so we don’t fall into the biases of whichever segment of women/female-identified/non-binary people we’re most grouped with. Half of the reason I love Feminism (the other half being to Destroy The Patriarchy, of course) is that it can lift and empower SUCH a diversity of voices, I love hearing myriad perspectives!

    Women’s podcast mocking women?
I was so disappointed to hear in several episodes that the hosts openly mock and disparage women who have any concerns at all about men accessing women’s spaces. Women’s rights to single-sex spaces matter to many of us. Are we not even allowed to ask if men should be in women’s prisons? Women’s sports? Rape crisis centers? Transgender rights are very clearly at odds with women’s rights and we need to be big girls and actually talk about and settle some conflicts, not just call people “garbage” snd “TERF” and be silent to privilege men who want to be included.

Two Kickass Women Reporting on Seriously Important Things
I am SOOO excited that Jeanne and Eula are back for the 3rd season! This is one of my favorite podcast because how awesomely each topic is researched and how incredible the podcast chemistry is that Jeanne and Eula have. AND, these topics makes laugh and cry at the same time.

BTSW: salve for our sexist world

    Vital show
I love this podcast! I have so many moments of recognition listening to it, it feels validating to hear how sexism impacts the workplace, and how my observations about sexist behavior in said workplace have been correct, I wasn’t crazy after all. It’s nice to hear this subject being explored in such a thoughtful intelligent manner. Good work!

Love this podcast both as an employee and as a manager of other women. So thoughtful, so helpful.

Should be mandatory for all MBA students
I’ve never reviewed a podcast until now, but this one is so on point that I can’t help it. I’m also a reluctant participant in the whole discussion about gender politics in the workplace, but again, I feel that our culture and society have almost forced me to speak up. Not to be confused with leaning in! Speaking up! This podcast gives me lots of tactics for being heard and respected in life and in the workplace. Thank you.

    Realistic and Positive
This show deals with real life everyday issues that women face in the workplace. Bonus - unlike many platforms that help us face up to the harsh reality of sexism in 2019 - this show won’t leave you feeling angry and disillusioned. How can that be? Because this show offers tactics to help us navigate the day-to-day struggles we face personally and tactics for changing things for ourselves and our sisters at the organizational, political and societal scale as well. The hosts are smart, funny and engaging. The editing, music and guests are top notch. I can’t get enough!

    This podcast is a lifesaver
Being able to tune in and listen to others suffering from the same type of workplace abuses helps so much. (Not that I want anyone to suffer, it just helps to not be alone). And when you get canned (again) for speaking up for what’s right, BTSW helps you get through the heartbreak of feeling like a failure and outsider. This podcast helps you get through to the next moment in your life. Great hosts, absolute pleasure to hear their perspectives and learn new things about a cause that torments my life daily.

    This Podcasts Maintains My Sanity
I deeply appreciate all the folks who make this podcast. It has gotten me through my hard days with my own ongoing harassment claim and I can’t help but share and rave about every episode to at least 2 other people in my life EVERY SINGLE TIME (usually including my boss who is a fellow committed, intersectional Feminist, but still we work in a sexist workplace - they aren’t kidding y’all!). Thank you team! If YOU aren’t listening - stop wishing you had more tools to fight sexism and START LISTENING!!! (Maybe the truest sentence on lots of levels beyond this podcast, too... LISTEN!)

    Don’t get mad, get tactics!
Not sure how to navigate a workspace that is dominated by cis-gender men? This podcast gives you both reassurance that what you’re feeling about your job is valid and also useful things you can do to combat the sexist behaviors that are all too common in the modern workplace.

    Not Just for Women
This is such an incredible podcast and it’s really helped me become more aware of how I interact with women- not just in the workplace, but in my day-to-day life as well- and how I can be a better ally (and person in general). I always make sure to mention it to friends and coworkers looking for podcast recommendations!

    Listen and enjoy
Great podcast. Very much enjoy the tactics. I’ve practiced many of them in my academic career. My favorite tactic is letting a meeting know how many times I’ve been interrupted so I can finally finish my sentence.

Thank goodness for a healthy and approachable dialogue about the real issue of sexism at work. I’m usually exhausted thinking about sexism and it’s impact on my life, but Battle Tactics gives me hope

    Empowering, supportive and real
I love this podcast. It’s eye opening, well researched and very helpful. The tone is somehow upbeat even though the facts are often discouraging. It’s refreshing to hear someone talk openly about topics that are often taboo or left unspoken, and the tactics are always helpful. I love the supportive and encouraging tone of the hosts as they interact with each other and their guests. I look forward to every episode.

I have been waiting my entire working life for this podcast
I feel like this podcast is speaking directly to me, about me and about my workplace. This show is a thoughtful exploration of a topic that is often impossible to personally address. Each episode, I find myself saying “yes, exactly!” I only regret finding this podcast so late!

Completely relatable—timely and helpful. I predict this podcast will get better and stronger by the week. Keep up this much needed dialogue with actual workarounds and ways to self-empower but we are doing it simultaneously and together —what new world will we create....

    entertaining and useful
Opened my eyes to a lot of things. Entertaining and useful. Great tactics for men and women. Really, everyone should listen to this, but also, everyone will enjoy listening to this.

    Listener
This is for sure a needed podcast, not going into the institutional and system issues at hand, but offering tactics and spaces to process as well. I have listened to every podcast, I am a part of the facebook group that allows for further discussions, and genuinely appreciate having these two gems of humans offering this podcast to us all - plus the folks they bring on!
